SETS sets up shop in Chennai

Saturday, 03 April , 2004, 14:24

The Society for Electronic Transactions and Security (SETS), a premier
research and development centre in the area of Information Security
(INFOSEC), opened its operational headquarters today.

Set up at a 5,000 sq ft of built-up accommodation provided by the Tamil
Nadu Government, it was inaugurated by Principal Scientific Advisor to
Government of India and SETS Chairman Dr R Chidambaram in the presence of
State Information Secretary Vivek Harinarain.

 A brain-child of President A P J Abdul Kalam, SETS was a public-private
initiative taken by Dr Chidambaram for the purpose of sensitising the need
for and certification of the Information Security products and services and
provide one-stop-solution for all information and network security needs.

An official of the SETS told UNI that the main aim of SETS was to promote
the study and awareness of INFOSEC, develop innovative products and new
applications in the area of Electronic Transactions, with particular
reference to Information Security for the domestic market.

Besides it would take up projects and provide turnkey solutions with
in-house resources or with participation of its member organisations,
advise the Government on policy formulation and act as a buffer between
sensitive user agencies in the Government and Corporate houses for
developing security solutions, provide consultancy services to Governments,
banks and other public and private sector institutions to safe-guard the
information and knowledge generation resources of the country.

The official said SETS would develop standards for hardware and software
packages, become a certifying agency in the area of INFOSEC and serve as a
centre for promoting cooperation and interaction in research activities
between academia and industry. He said the Government had, in principle,
agreed to allot three acres of land at the MGR Knowledge City in Taramani
for SETS for setting up a huge base station and a hi-tech equipped
technical lab to facilitate research work.

SETS had also signed a number of MOUs and formed collaborations with
leading technical institutions like Tata Consultancy Services, Electronics
Corporation of India Limited, Institute of Mathematical Science, Anna
University and Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu.

The main purpose of the MOUs was to jointly pool up their resources with
those of SETS to develop technologies for information and network security
and to network these institutions.

It would start a long-term research programme too in collaboration with
Queensland University of Technology on Cryptology and Network Security.

On its forthcoming plans, the official said SETS would develop a secrecy
system for electronic transactions and other applications, set up a centre
for advanced research in Cryptography with special emphasis on
cryptanalysis, explore avenues to provide secure e-governance for the Tamil
Nadu Government and for the country in collaboration with ELCOT and
publishing of monographs on information security-related topics.

It would also launch short-term certificate courses on Information
Security in collaboration with SASTRA, a deemed University and Institute
for Development and Research in Banking Technology.
