People hold gold for roughly the same purpose as they hold cryptocurrency.

Sure.  Some other crypto currency may, and quite likely will, replace 
bitcoin.

But at the present moment, Bitcoin is where it is at.  The aggregate 
value of all the various cryptocurrencies out there is approximately the 
same as the aggregate value of bitcoin.
