Is achieving security a hopeless quest?

I heard nothing specific about cryptography but many
here are interested in security.

The panel noted that there are a couple of modes in the problem space.
Correlated risks vs. targeted risks in a discussion of insurance and
insurance risks.  Some might find food for thought in that cars 20 years
ago solved a big set of problems but introducing computers and
communication to vehicles reopens these cans of worms thought solved and
thus dismissed my many.
