No; they relied upon detecting the local oscillator which radiated quite
nicely from the (gain) antenna due to poor isolation (i.e. design), and as
it varied with the frequency you could tell to which channel the TV was
tuned.
Sort of related to crypto, I guess; you know, leaking information and all
that...
And as Eric was such a 'appy cat 'e was a piece of cake...
