That's certainly a relevant topic. You could survey the publicly-known
state of the art and quantify the rumors of secret NSA/NRO state of the art.

Another crypto-relevant topic is, Why is cryptography so hard? This could
look at either the programming level or the user level. What is special
about crypto programming that is so much more challenging than
run-of-the-mill programming? Why is there so much difficulty in getting
broad adoption of some "obviously good" tool?
