A 25-year-old jail inmate facing serious criminal charges thought he had
St. Lucie County detention deputies fooled when he wrote a letter to a
friend outlining a detailed escape plan.

But the joke was on Robert Heike of Port St. Lucie.

Deputies deciphered his secret code in less than an hour, moved Heike to a
more secure area of the jail and warned his friend on the outside against
abetting an escape attempt.

[...]

They showed the astounded Heike a translation of his escape letter, which
called for a friend to throw a plastic bag of supplies for the escape over
a fence into the exercise yard. Since deputies check the fenced-in
perimeter several times a day, the plan had no chance of success.

Heike told deputies it took him four years to devise his not-so-secret
code.
