Oh dear. So two things. 1. Jon - "the Quantum Credulity Effect, that the
very word "quantum" sucks people's brains out and leaves them incapable of
thought." My FIRST thought was, so...executives? And that's just wrong.
They have thoughts. Well, some of them do.
2. The Federal Reserve knows where bills are at various points in their
lifecycle. Any bill that comes in gets put through a machine that checks
it's quality, and if the quality is low enough, it gets sucked up,
shredded, and replaced with another bill with a different serial number.
But every serial number of every bill that goes through an FRB is recorded.
And that's much of the monetary supply, considering how little of the
monetary supply is cash, these days. Barring coins. Side note: In Philly,
there's a vault with 135 million Golden Dollars, the Sacajawea coins?
They're so unpopular, it's posited they will never leave that vault, and
never be circulated. But it's not allowed to destroy them. Fascinating
stuff.
