I'm aware that Monero (XMR) is one of the most anonymous tokens out
there, but I must confess that I don't fully understand its underlying
primitives. I do know two risks though:
1. Because the blockchain is so opaque, the risk of an inflation
attack is a major concern. The code must be scrutinized extremely to
mitigate this risk, but elimination might never be complete. Would you
trust your reserve of value in a token that can't be fully audited?
2. Anonymity in cyberspace involves more than the blockchain
transaction itself. All devices, networks, and participants can spy or
leak information.
I can give my own testimony on that. I used to transact on a non-KYC
exchange using Tor and all the bells and whistles. Everything went
well for a while until it didn't. I sent the fiat amount, made the
trade and only when I tried the customary withdrawal did they hold the
balance and ask for KYC. At that point I had the Sophie's choice of
losing the held balance or giving-up my privacy (present and past).
Because I wasn't doing anything illegal, I chose to comply with the
KYC.
To an extent, that lack of privacy isn't exclusive to blockchains.
Unless you walk around wearing a ski mask, and carrying no mobile
device whatsoever, you are being watched. Also, try walking into a car
dealership with the mentioned "totally fungible sack of dollar coins"
and buying a car. But call me first, because I want to be there when
the black helicopters arrive... lol
