No need to resort to tricks. Buy a box of numbered security envelopes
over the counter (I imagine that many office supply chains can at the
very least order them on request) and maintain a separate list of
which envelope number maps to which employee. Security seals might
also be an option. Presto; cheap, tamper-evident individual storage of
moderately-sized items. For extra security against physical palpation
attacks, as might perhaps be a consideration for mechanical keys, put
the item inside a padded envelope which itself goes into the security
envelope.
