1) Mostly it means PNAS is not a peer-reviewed journal.
  Academy members can publish anything they want.

2) When the article says "encryption" they mean /encoding/
 as in QR codes. Not the same.

3) When the article says "unclonable" they mean human fingerprints
 are /unique/. Not the same.

4) There is also a smidgen of steganography. Some things that are
 conspicuous in the IR are imperceptible at visible wavelengths.

Overall diagnosis: Severe case of Dunning-Kruger syndrome.
