Since quite a few years HDDs have platters made out of glass
manufactured similar to ingots, with tightly controlled crystal structures.

If stuck by a hard point (for example a ball pen hammer) they usually
turn into glass powder. The big risk is probably inhaling the remnants
of the disc. Data recovery less of a problem.

SSDs are of course a whole other can of worms.
