You might also look at the Ubiquiti Edgerouter series. They run Vyatta
which is linux underneath. You can ssh in and sudo whatever you want
including installing other packages.
The Edgerouter X has five gigabit ports and is powered either by PoE
or a 12V supply and lists for $59 or $49 used. The older Edgerouter
Lite which is what I have has 3 ports, no PoE and lists for $127. I
see that Amazon has the 10 port PoE Edgerouter 10X for $109 new or $87
used. The X series slower than the others but is plenty fast for SOHO.
They all can route gigabit Ethernet at line speed.
They're just routers, not access points. Ubiquiti also sell access
points which I also like.
