Shorting cryptos works as any other investment.
That's also rather based on some true original
owner (share lender, or simply you) wanting the
things back because think on longer term they're
going upside past the sell, while you get to
play with them in shorter term downside.

breather, BTC is $12600 today

Negative balance often means debt, which means another whole layer
enabling asserting, accepting and collecting it, or at least
evaluating lending risk beforehand, and writing it off. Those seem
many years down the road before embedded in a coin system.  Real
world ID and goon squads aren't disappearing soon either.
