MISSISSAUGA, Ont. (CP) - Certicom Corp., a specialist in Internet security
software, has cut its first-quarter loss to $1.2 million US from $1.4
million US a year ago.

For the quarter ended July 31, the per-share loss was three cents,
compared with five cents a year earlier, the Mississauga-based firm
(TSX:CIC) reported Thursday.

Revenue rose to $2.9 million from $2.2 million US. The firm reports in
U.S. dollars.

Highlights in the quarter included a $3.5-million-US contract with
Research In Motion (TSX:RIM) that expands use of Certicom security in
BlackBerry communication devices.

"We are pleased with our results for the first quarter as we continue to
see increased adoption of elliptic curve cryptography, or ECC, in the
market," CEO Ian McKinnon said in a release.

"This will be the long-term growth driver for our product and intellectual
property licensing business."
