Sadly, this is a long-term issue with many an ISP; not just AOL.
Of course, AOL has some of the more well-known goofs, among the more
memorable being the incident in which a groupie/fan/stalker claimed she
was the wife of Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails fame) and got access to
Reznor's account, credit card, and e-mail. Nevermind that Reznor was not
married at the time.

This sort of attack can be (and, more importantly, has been)
successfully launched against ISPs, telcos, banks, and law enforcement
agencies alike. The concept of mumbling isn't even that new. Hell, it's
been a standard comedic rune for decades...if not centuries.

Bottom line: humanity may have acquired knowledge of Good and Evil
in the Garden of Eden, but the ability to tell the two apart was obviously
not part of the package deal.
