                    STORK CRYPTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP:
Towards a Roadmap for Future Research

                November 26-27, 2002, Bruges, BELGIUM

                      CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS

The IST STORK project (http://www.stork.eu.org) has the objective of
establishing a roadmap for future European research in cryptography within
the 6th Framework Programme (2002-2006, http://www.cordis.lu/fp6/).
To this end, an open workshop is being held in November 2002, with the
following objectives:

o to identify gaps between state of the art in cryptology research and
current and forthcoming requirements for cryptographic algorithms and
     techniques;

o to establish a constituency of interested parties to contribute to and
monitor the work of the STORK project in its planning of future research
     under FP6.

The STORK project intends to establish the framework for a European Network
of Excellence in Cryptology, that will be the core of European research
in the domain.

Cryptology is an interdisciplinary research area with a high strategic impact
for industry and for the society as a whole. There is a clear need for the
design and evaluation of advanced cryptographic algorithms and protocols,
the development of proof techniques enabling to partially validate their secu-
rity, the investigation of new cryptanalytic techniques, and the development
of tools supporting the design and evaluation process. Future research is
motivated by the changing environment and threat models in which cryptology
is deployed, by the gradual erosion of the computational difficulty of the
mathematical problems on which cryptology is based, and by the challenges
presented by the requirements of new applications.

The workshop will last for one and a half days, starting in the morning on
Tuesday 26th November and ending with lunch on Wednesday 27th Novem-
ber. The first morning will be mainly devoted to a series of invited talks from
leading figures. In the afternoon, participants will have the opportunity to
present their position papers in short contributed talks. It is anticipated
that on Wednesday, a number of parallel sessions will be held to discuss in
more detail the requirements in several areas. The workshop will be wrapped up
with a plenary session.

Contributions to, and participation in, this workshop are sought from all
those interested in the future research and applications of cryptology. All
participants are required to register prior to Monday 21th October 2002, and
to submit by Monday 7th October 2002 a 1-2 page position paper containing
their views on the priorities for future research in one of four main areas:
foundations, design and analysis, applications, and legal and regulatory
aspects. All contributions will be circulated to all participants in the work-
shop and also made available via the project website.

There will be a registration charge of 170 EUR for participation in the work-
shop, to include lunch and dinner on day 1, lunch on day 2, and refreshments
during the meeting. To register:

o send your position paper to stork-submissions at stork.eu.org before Monday
     7th October 2002;

o complete the online registration form before Monday 21th October 2002
     (http://www.stork.eu.org).

Send an email to stork-info at stork.eu.org if you have further questions.

Partners in the STORK project are: K.U.Leuven (B) (Coordinator),
Ecole Normale Superieure (F), Ruhr-Universitaet Bochum (D), Gemplus (F),
Philips Semiconductors (D), Vodafone (UK), Ericsson AB (S), France
Telecom R&D (F).
