I honestly suspect stupidity and single minded, single goal oriented
thinking.
They if asked: "if making communication easier for criminals because of
flaws in phones was a good idea" they would say no.   Justice is blind and
thus almost unable to grasp second order problems outside of appeal.

Criminal convictions are a contest between story tellers (and critics).
This is why parallel construction of a prosecution's story is so desired.
A lot of people have trouble with fact and fiction to the degree that the
CSI
effect is a serious issue.

This crime is so evil that many will suspend critical thinking and believe
that this demand is magic sauce to save the universe.
