[Cryptography] Possibility of a quick solution of security of communications of the common people?

The recent (relatively large) series of discovered problems in
IT-security software shows definitely the necessity of fundamental
improvements in that field. However, I am afraid that it would take
quite a long time until improvements satisfactory in all aspects
(including high efficiency, high user comfort, etc.) are achieved, if
at all. I suppose therefore that it could be sensible to strive for, as
a first step, a good minimum solution in the sense that the target of
security to be provided is limited to small volumes of text messages
(emails, SMS of the common people). If there could thus be (free
open-source) secure encryption software for them to do end-to-end
encryption (either symmetric or asymmetric) on their PC or smartphone
-- with software that are carefully examined and certified by trusted
institutions like national standardization bodies and/or
IT-professional institlutions -- wouldn't that be a fine progress in the
right direction? To enhance the trust stemming from such certificates,
the same software should preferrably be certified by such institutions
of different nations of the world. (A software that has obtained
certificates from a number of different countries is likely to be
pretty trustworthy.)
